I live in the suburbs, will they annoy neighbors?

Hens do not make that much noise. They cluck and cackle a bit, but they don't crow like roosters do. However, they may not be appropriate for the suburbs in that neighbors may not like having them around and your community may have by laws about keeping them, since they would be considered livestock.

Have you ever been to Key West? Hens, roosters, baby chicks, all run wild there. You see them everywhere you go. It is kind of neat really.

Female chickens don't "crow" like roosters, but they can still make a lot of noise. One of their loudest call is a distress- or surprise-cackling that ends in a loud squawk. If the chickens are exposed to a lot of startle-inducing elements (cats, dogs, strangers entering their area, etc) their noise can become a annoyance. If you keep them secure, and limit the other critters/people who can get near them, you can help to reduce their cackling to a minimum.

Keep their poop cleaned up and the smell can be controlled.

They're actually great for insect control in the garden.

Get "bantams" rather than standard bred chickens; they're smaller and more manageable.

Females are SO much more quiet compared to roosters. I'd don't think they will annoy your neighbors because they go to sleep as soon as the sun goes down. I live next to some hens (10) and I don't hear them unless I concentrate

G'day Hayden,

Thank you for your question.

They can cluck a bit. Chickens have been kept in suburban areas. Indeed, my cousin keeps them although she has to get rid of two roosters as the neighbors are starting to complain. However, I would speak with the relevant local authorities as they often have rules about whether you can or can't keep chickens and how many you can keep.

Seasons greetings.

not a good idea for the suburbs. chickens smell somthin awful and although hens arent too awful loud, without a rooster present one of the hens may have rooster like qualities and will even crow so they can be just as loud as roosters
