Look at the size of the injured knee and compare it to the other one. Is there swelling? does it look like there is fluid/blood around the knee? If the answer is yes it is possible you could have torn a meniscus, or a ligament within the joint capsule. If the answer is yes and in a couple of days the swelling has not gone down, I would think an MRI would be ordered to see what was damaged. I have known people that have torn the ACL ligament simply by a twisting karate move.

If you have insurance go see your provided doc; if not, ice it down and take it easy. Leave the E.R. for gunshot vics.
You should get PROFESSIONAL help though, it is possible to do damage to the cartilage as well as tendons and ligaments surrounding the knee. Unless you're a regular at popping your own knee back into place you most likely wouldn't be able to do it by yourself, it's incredibly painful. Your particular injury may not be all that serious. Give it a little time and if the knee doesn't get any better you should make an appointment to see your doctor.

Go to a doctor. Put ice on it so it stops the swelling. The doctor will either stick a needle in your leg to drain the fluid. Or just let it sit for a month. You will most likely need to use crutches. This is called a hyper-extended kneecap. If it is a bad case you may need serious surgery, and not be able to play sports as well as you use to. Also he will probaly give you a brace for when you exercize.
Hope this helps.

That happened to me while running. The first time it happened, it hurt for about a month. Then my knees got weaker and it keeps happening just when i land my foot at a wrong angle while walking. It hurts for a shorter amount of time each time.
My physician just said I probably pulled a ligament and it's nothing to worry about.
