I want to get my mom something for Christmas... and she would love to have a TIVO... but she doesn't want to pay the subscript to it. Anyone know of anything similar to TIVO that can be used w/o a subscription? She wants to be able to automatically record show etc on channel that are number 100+...a VCR won't cut it.

If you have a computer with, "Windows XP Media Center", you can get what is called a TV tuner card for your computer. Then just run coaxial cable to the computer (tv tuner card) and the Media Center functions just like a DVR. This is a better option, because your computer should have considerably more memory than a DVR. You also have the ability to record the movie or tv show to a disk (as long as you have a burner) and watching it on your television, otherwise just watch it on the computer.

Sony has a system out called the "Playstation X". I didn't really seem to get much notice in the states, but it plays games and works like a TiVO.

Well, most cable and satellite companies offer "DVR" boxes...that are the same thing as Tivo pretty much. But you still have to pay like $10/month for the box.

I think the only other thing you could do is get a dvd burner and burn shows on to a dvd. I think all dvr's require a subscription. I only pay 5 bucks a month for mine through directv
