So I work in a popular toy store. I feel like leaving the name out... just because. Anyways, I am miserable there.
I didn't think it would be so bad. But my manager is driving me crazy. She is so obnoxious.
For example, one of the last things that happened is I was really sick (sore throat, could hardly get out of bed...) and so I finally decided to call in sick. She answers and I tell her what's wrong. In this sarcastic untrusting voice she says, "You will need a doctor's note if you aren't coming in."
I never go to the doctors for being sick like this, unless it goes on too long! And since when do we need a doctors note for one sick day? I'm not going to waste my money for a doctor to tell me what is wrong, even though I already know.
But that is just one of the many cases of her being so annoying.
I am tired of seeing co-workers crying because of her.
I was going to wait until after christmas...
But I can't take this anymore!
Should I just get out of there? Help.

Just wanted to add onto this.
We have walkie talkies. If you start talking as soon as the button is pushed, the first part of your word will be cut off. Well she will push the button as soon as the button is pushed, cutting of the beginning of people's names. So you ask if it was to you, since you only heard "-ee" or something, she will get really pissed.
And once I was trying to talk to a customer and while he was explaining something, she said what sounded like my name over the walkie talkie headset. So I was going to reply as soon as the customer was done talking, not to be rude. But before I get the chance, she holds down the button and says my name in the most annoying obnoxious voice ever about 20 times before releasing the button. After all this it turns out all she had to tell me is that my lunch started 4 minutes ago (which I knew but as I said I was helping someone).

Plus, I wanted to add that I haven't called in sick for a few months. And I believe I saw something say that you will need a doctors note if you are going to call in sick for more than a day (or something like that).

I wish there was a way to directly respond to some comments. Thank you to some people.
But to one person who said to get off my butt and get to work or the doctors, I do not work today anyways. But the thing is, if I did go to work, I wouldn't be able to work. So what would be the point? And I would get people sick. Plus, so many people come in with newborn babies, etc.
AND, a doctor costs a lot of money. Unless I really need to go, I will not go.

You should go over her head and speak with her boss. Bring documentation and let them know that your boss is being extremely hostile.

How bad do you need the paycheck? I would definitely start looking for something you enjoy doing. Life is waaaay too short to work a job you hate just cuz you need the money.

What do you like to do? How can you turn that into making money?
We were all taught that you have to work for a paycheck in order to pay the bills and having your own business is too risky, don't do it.

But bottom line, is the paycheck world is more risky now than ever. People get laid off, downsized, let go, fired every day without a hint that it's coming.

Find something you can do where you are in charge of your own income and don't have to depend on some boss that may or may not be a nice person.

Check out my company, we're always looking for good people that want to help others, are coachable, and have integrity. Email me if you want more information.

Only you can answer that question.

You will find annoying and obnoxious people at any work place. You will also find, they can have a rule that require you to have a doctor's note for excused absences. However, more common is, if you exceed certain number of days, they'll require one, but not for one day or two. Either way though, it is part of working for someone else.... you work by their rules, not yours.

What I suggest is this... start looking for a new place to work. Find a place to work first, then quit. There is no reason why you should sacrifice your income.

By the way, do you know what your company rule is for sick leaves? You may want to find the employee's manual or an official rule, and find out. If you find your boss is acting on her own to require you a note, you might want to go to her boss and discuss the issue.

If you are working in a poisonous situation, get out. 1.Make a list of all the things you do: stock shelves? Run cash register? Customer Service? These are things you can bring to another employer. If you do any of the above, they are marketable skills that can be transferred to any kind of retail business. 2. If you are working at a national chain such as "Toys R Us", for example, compile a list of employee complaints and go up the ladder to HR, district manager, etc. and file a complaint. Be sure you are recording actual incidents, and not just whining. 3. Look around. Many retailers bring on temporary help for the Christmas season. You might be able to snag one of these until a permanent solution appears. If you can afford it, My advice is get out.

Never quit a job unless you've got something else lined up. If you start looking for a job now it will actually help your mental state of mind while you are at work with your annoying boss. Just start putting in applications and go on an interview or two and you'll be able to handle a few more weeks at your current job no problem. Then you can say "I'm OUT!" and never look back!

Awe yeah....not because of the doctor's note though. In places like that a manager has to tell employees to bring a doctors note or people will be calling in sick whenever they don't feel like working. I run a resturant and sadly enough kids try calling in sick daily (sometimes I feel like an overpaid babysitter). But if your boss doesn't treat people with respect and makes them cry I would leave...but not before telling someone above her how you feel about the situation. Good luck!

As far as the doctor's note goes, unless you are taking several sick days in a row, or you make a habit of phoning in sick, that's twaddle. Check out your contract, or talk to your shop steward.
As far as quitting -- if the manager is reducing the stff to tears, then it's time to talk to her manager. Get written statements from your co-workers and present them with a request that your manager be given some job training/counselling as staff morale and efficiency is being eroded, if not destroyed, by her behavior.
Quitting just leaves the problem for someone else to face.
Good luck to you.

PS: No one should be unhappy working in a toy store. That's oxymoronic behavior!!!

you always needed a doc note, some people don't inforce it. if you can't take it anymore then quit. but where are you going to get another job. The reason your boss is your boss is because she is the boss and you are not. you probably couldn't do her job. now get off your a s s and go to work or the doc.

maybe you can befriend other managers? maybe you can gather up some info on how the performance of your manager is costing the company $$ and then talk to regional/corporate human resources people? or maybe you can just quit and find a better job.
