How does that work and which hard drive sizes can I use it on?

The compression/expansion programs that used to do that fell out of favor pretty quick. They greatly slowed down the computer, and hard drives got so big and so cheap they weren't needed anymore.
They also worked by putting your entire hard drive into one compressed file, and were a major recipe for disaster.

I think you are thinking of expanding volumes. You still have to add a physical drive, but in Raid confihgs, you can add a drive, then, expand the volume to realize the additional capacity you added. If you are using XP, the command is diskpart, but don't use it unless you know what you are doing. You have been warned.
