Basically depending on what you are talking about it just means that the person is going through the motions but not putting any extra effort in to it.. or not having any emotions into the daily routine... Just going through the motions of life..

When somebody says they are just "going through the motions" means that they are just doing a routine with out any feeling in it. Its hard to explain. Like lets say you wanted a divorce cause you realized you didnt live your partner as much as you thought you did. but you still get up everyday and make coffee and go to work and say "I love you" and have sex. But you're not really THERE. You dont have any love there. You're just "going through the motions" of a marriage. Its like that

not sure what that has to do with newborns....it means that one just goes through the motions of their life because they have too, not because they want to or because they enjoy it. Its really quite negative. We should never just go through the motions.
