Is it me or has the meaning of Christmas (i.e. the celebration of the birth of Jesus Christ) all but evaporated? Nowadays kids think it's all about a fictitious old man with a white beard, red coat an black boots who travels around the globe by a sleigh pulled by reindeer delivering presents; many adults just use it as an excuse to eat and drink themselves stupid.
...and what of this absurd notion that Christmas should not be recognised as a Christian festival in the UK for fear of offending minority religions? Does Turkey feel the need to suspend Islamic festivals so as not to offend its Christian minorities? I mean, there is even a clue in the name - CHRISTmas. Where has the it gone?

I think it is quite sad that Christians are ignored when it comes to Christmas. They are sometime seen as people who use this time to force their religion on people. But if your celebrating a religious festival it is a bit hypocritical to ignore the meaning behind it. For many non-religious people, Christmas holds a special meaning, as it is the time of the year that we recognise the importance of love, friendships and family. So some of the core Christian values are still there.

I don't see the problem. I personally would welcome a kind of divergence of Christmas from a 'winterval' type affair. Let winterval be a drunken, bloated monstrosity of a festival for all those that don't know/want the meaning of Christmas. And let Christmas itself be a quiet, reflective celebration of the birth of Christ for those who want to celebrate it.

Let it go. Nobody can stop you celebrating Christmas or whatever festivals you want in your own home, in your own way. Why does it matter what everyone else does?

I say it's time for Christians to put out a rallying call and take Christmas back for themselves. Demand that decorations have no references to Christmas or Jesus as it is offensive to your religion. Boycott tacky Christmas-branded products. Refuse to attend Christmas parties.

This is your chance, people. You can either sit there and moan about it all, or you can get up and do something for once.

Originally what we celebrate as Christmas was the Pagan winter solstice celebration. The Roman Catholic Church attempted to usurp this celebration and keep the faithful from "falling into Pagan ways" by creating Christmas. It is laughable when Christians talk about getting back to the meaning of Christmas. Do they really want to abandon the story of the fictitious virginal birth and quest of the three wise men and go back to our solstice roots?

I think its time that we stop trying to convert people to our own path at this time of year and take up the transcendent message of peace on earth and good will to one another which has come to unify this time of year.

I agree... christmas now is all about material posestions....
no1 seems to celebrate the actualy meaning of christmas!!!

Christmas is supposidly offending minority religious groups but I think that we live in the UK most people are Christian and we have to respect those events of minority religious groups and so other minority religiouys groups should respect our festive events like Christmas!

I agree 100% Other religion that have nothing to do with christ celebrate it anyway because of the gifts. I think its ok for parents to give there kids something to believe in but not lie to them about the true meaning of CHRISTmas.

You are 100% right. Modern day Christmas is all about commercialism and not about celebrating the birth of Jesus Christ. As a matter of fact, millions of people think you are supposed to drink yourself silly to celebrate the birth of our Lord.

My story - at work we had to abandon Christmas parties as one member was a Jehovah's witness, in other words she imposed her beliefs on us, the majority probably who couldn't give a toss what she was, just went along with it at work. But I thought it was a disgrace after all I never asked what she celebrated nor am I interested, but that was one example of P.C. gone wrong.
Now I celebrate in my own way and give presents any time of the year. You have a good one yourself cheers.

I agree but all you can do is teach your kids the real meaning of Christmas. We stay involved in our church and I try to talk about the birth of Christ each time my kids mention Santa and what gifts they will be getting.

A straight short answer will do,
Christmas has gone straight down the loo
Charles, That Cheeky Lad!
P.S. Though when I was a kid, I centred on presents more than Christ too.

I feel very sad to admit it but I do agree. For the first time in my life I have no enthusiasm whatsoever for Christmas. It's just a commercial event now and an excuse for people to get drunk.

Can't wait to get it over with.

So sad ........
