neither, I wrap each branch starting at the trunk working my way to the end of the branch on one side then go back down the other side to the trunk and do this all over the tree. Takes about 6 strands of lights and a lot of time but looks pretty.

I wrap christmas lights around the tree but on one branch from an upper branch then one from a lower branch around and around until the tree is covered with lights

I hate seeing a "garland" of electrical wires so I go from the center of the tree out to the branch tips and back again.
