anytime you have exponential growth it is convenient to use a log scale because the log of an exponent is a constant, this will make the plot look like a straight line. For example the population of the united states or the speed of computer processors versus time will be a straight line or very close, when you use a log scale.

Look at a slide rule. Or the lengths of the strings in a piano, or the intervals between frets on a guitar.
