It honors Lord Berkeley who was from Jersey in England. New Jersey was originally part of New York when the English took it from the Dutch. The king of England gave the colony to his brother, the Duke of York, hence New York. The colony proved to be too big to manage, so part was given to Lord Berkeley and George Carteret and became New Jersey. At one point it was two colonies, East and West Jersey.

It's a little known fact that as the first "clothing optional" colony it was originally called "Nude Jersey."

However, this was later changed to the more acceptable "New Jersey" by the Puritans who were notoriously shy about removing their clothing, even going so far as to bathe fully clothed and developing a unique ability to go the bathroom without moving or removing any part of their elaborate costumes.
