I like some rap. Rappers who actually have something to say in the form of a story or to get a message across are completely fine, and I respect some of them too (most recently Lupe Fiasco). But what is so appealing about so many "artists" who have done nothing but talk about their grillz and shootouts to get to where they are? Beats have nothing to do with this, either. You can easily put a good beat together but put sensible lyrics behind it.
Basically, in short, how is this considered music at all?

It's a cultural phenomenon and has NOTHING to do with music at all. This so called new "Hip/Hop" is a fad and nothing more. In the 80s the big thing was Hair Metal bands in the early 90s it was grunge, late 90s those asinine boy bands and now this garbage that is spoon fed to an apathetic nation who would rather listen to what that dumb *** Fergie has to say then actually listen to trained musicians play songs with chords, structure, melody and integrity. The music business is just that, a business. All the heads of the record companies are interested in is shifting units, nothing more. They don't give a crap if what they push onto America's youth is insincere and banal, if it keeps the green rollin' in they are content to run it into the ground until the next fad rears it head. Hip/Hop will dye out and some other worthless nonsense will take its place.
In a world of consumer gluttony today's music business is all about attitude and style than actual substance and talent.

i dont know if you are black, white, hispanic, or whatever, but it is music. there are a lot of white people that will say that rap is not music. if sreaming into a microphone over loud guitar chords can be considered music, then saying words over a bass heavy beat can also be music. ill admit, the musicality of hip hop is on the decline now (with the recent popularity southern rappers and producers). new rappers over the past couple years have been more ignorant than the rappers of old, but the older rappers were rapping about the same things- women, jewelry, violence, and drugs. study the history of rap before you go judge it...

well the "beat" is half of the song so i dont know how u can say the beat has nothing to do with it. it does. the beat is what makes it catchy. i prefer a catchy hip hop beat to ANY AND ALL MUSIC. then, when u get guys like jay-z , 2pac, chamillionaire, for minor, eminem... .who can put meaning behind the music- i dont know whats not to like. i guess if the beat doesn't grab you then ur out of luck. i think there is HUGE amount of talent is putting words to a beat that mean something and rhyme- if u dont think so then u really dont have a clue what you're talking about

To me its the beat. I am not a big fan of pop or rock, so I find hip-hop more appealing. I like Lupe, too. His Food and Liquor is a very good album. Kanye West is cool too.

It's what the radios put out there. I think music has slowly evolved itself to where soft rock became hard rock and hip hop. I like the 90s music myself because that's what I grew up with listeneing to on the radio. People now hear hip hop on the radio as kids and grow up with it I suppose.

Rap oftentimes glamorizes the "crook culture" that's neither right here nor there imo...seriously-acclaimed movies like Godfather or Pulp Fiction glamorizes crime and no person talks sh*t approximately the ones movies in that regard... ...however to reply your query no I didn't get interested in Rap quite simply due to the fact I appreciated the field subject...I appreciated how the song sounded and the way I might vibe to it...the fantastical culture lyricism is only a part of my love for Rap & Hip-Hop but it surely does not outline it... BQ: Yeah mosdef...

absolutely nothing!! I totally agree with you!! But some songs may not bring across a message to you yourself at first cause you arent going through that but it might be a certain kind of a message to you later. But I still think you're right about some hip-hop and rap being pointless!!

I guess because the most population of Americans is African Americans and rap/hip hop is our style! We can express ourselfs in that form of music! I'm not saying all black people do it but most of them do!

Because we live in a tastless community. I mean think about it. These people all sound the same. Maybe some people like dancing and you can dance to it. Maybe some people just do whats popular and for some reason this is popular. It is a strange phenomenon
