I am currently writing an essay and i would like to know if you can have a colon and then list everything else in a comma, or is that not for essays?

I am doing an English course right now and just covered colons, you can use a colon after an independent clause introducing one or more items. The list is usually introduced by words such as the following, as follows, these, or thus. A colon is also used when these words are implied but not stated.

Colons are formal.
For example, when one is writing a bisiness letter.
