Why do people whom you haven't heard from in years send you Christmas cards? I get cards from people in my road with whom I have never even spoken.

Well, there is a great reason. To keep in touch. Since computers became part of our American Lives, and we have become busier people, we have lost touch with our ancestor, and friends.

When I was growing up, everyone always sent a nice hand written card. They never sent computer copies of their life story. I read some of them, but they can sound really braggy, and arrogant.

When I was younger, I took all of my relatives for granted. Now, we have no contact with quite a few of them. It has been really difficult to piece our family back together.
Try it sometime. Just look up your last name, and see how many people there are. Many people only have an initial, or none. Many are unlisted, have non-published numbers, or have moved. Without all this history that we get in letters, (ie., " I just talked to my sister Martha, and her Daughter Lindsay, is going to buy a new house in Pittsburgh."), we would not have history to tie us to our ancestors.

Plus, there is no substitute for a hand written letter, or card. It feels real celebrative to look around and see all the cards, and pictures, and people who I love on display. It makes me feel like I am connected to them. A computer letter is okay, but we often just send jokes, or quick "How are you's."

Those people you have never spoken to, are a key to your past, or maybe your future. Who will you contact if your parents die? How will you know who to tell, or where to reach them. Wouldn't you like to have your children meet their extended family?

I was like you. I didn't' realize how important it was until I had lost touch. Then, I had kids, and when my kids started asking questions, or I wanted to share family things, I couldn't answer the questions they had. How would you feel if your parents, and siblings passed, and it was just you?

I really believe in keeping in touch now. Memories are very powerful. Do you remember things, people, or places you visited? It takes us back to an earlier time, or better times, or history. Please do yourself a favor. Do a little extra work, get a little joy from receiving cards from people care about you, (even if you haven't talked to them). We don't have many people in our lives that accept us, just because we are.
