My 11 month old has a cold. It started about two weeks ago. After the first week when it didn't clear up I took him to the doctor. He prescribed a decongestant. He has been taking it for 4 days and today he started coughing and has eye gunk. Is this because the cold is finally breaking up or should I take him back to the doctor?

He really needs to go back to the doctor. The gunk in his eyes and coughing is an indication of increasing mucus build up that is not being relieved by the decongestant alone. By going to the doctor now you will probably avoid a secondary infection of the ears or upper respiratory system. You didn't mention a fever, however if he has been running a low grade fever for a couple of days as well that would indicate the need for antiboitics. Also if he has redness in his throat that includes any white pockets he could have the onset of strep throat and going now would nip it in the bud. Good luck and hope your little guy feels better soon.

Probably, the cold is just running it's course. Be on the look out for a fever though (if he has one take him to the doctor, just in case he's getting an infection) and be sure that your son isn't having to strain to breathe. If he's straining to breathe (you'll notice his lips turning blue, wheezing or a pulling at his breastbone when he's breathing) take him the the ER right away. Other than that, you can try running a cool mist humidifier in his room to help break up the mucus and elevate the head of his bed so that the mucus doesn't settle in his lungs. Good luck! I hope he feels better soon!

The green in his eye could be an indication that the cold has moved into his eye - another term would be "pink eye" or conjunctivitis. They can give eye drops for the eyes.
