And should people below the poverty line really be spending $4. a day on cigarettes?

All the people I know at or below the poverty line smoke a pack a day or a half a pack a day. What's with that?
I never smoked when I was poor, what's the necessity?

I think it's a little of both.

Oh, poor people aren't allowed anything. You want to tell them how to spend what little they have! The US Supreme court has already overruled you on this issue!

Hate to tell you, much of America is below the poverty guidelines! Were you for or against raising minimum wage, which is still WAY below the poverty level! You wouldn't mind hiring them for that amount of money, wouldn't you?

Should the rich rob the poor so they can buy a multi-million dollar house?

If you want to take a conservative view, just think how much they pay in state and federal tax on a pack! They quit buying them, and maybe your taxes will get raised and you can pay for your own kids to go to school!

it's all how we spend it.
LOL...they all seem to smoke too. But don't worry about them...I have a lady living in the house next door ....it's a low income home that all she has to pay is 25% of her earnings for...she works maybe 3 months a year at the most and she's got a brand new car to drive...cell phone on her hip...1 kid that's very well dressed...2 ex husbands and a boyfriend, 1 hubby pays child support and the B/F helps with the rent I guess. She smokes, Drinks almost every day. She's doing just fine....Canadian government is making sure she's well looked after. And she's stickin it to em.

It could be both but if you have a decent job and spend all the money that is pointless. People shouldn't be smoking anyway- with those prices no wonder people are poor!

From my experience the people who made the most money were over their head in debt. I worked for a financial institution for years and I could never understand how much better off the the poorer people were.

to a degree, but it's very difficult on a limited income... and what about the people that don't smoke... or do you actually believe that all poor people smoke?

I think it's just misplaced priorities in life. Imagine how much people could save if they stopped buying cigarettes?

Yes it is! It's also true that the more you make, the more you spend! We are all materialistic animals!! We don't need a thing, it's all want, want, want! And people have rental units for stuff that doesn't fit in their homes, sick!!! That's my take on it! :)
