Vespa is both Latin and Italian word for "wasp".
When the first vespa scooter was made and brought to the President of the Vespa motor company, Enrico Piaggio, in 1946, he exlaimed "Sembra una vespa!" ("It looks like a wasp!"). That name stuck until now.
If you look closely as this Italian made motor scooter, you will see how accurate this description is, from oth the high pitch noise of itst two-stroke engine, to its body shape, with a thick rear part, which is connected to the front part by a narrow waist, and the steering rod which resembled an antennae.
