Jail is located in Cities or Counties of where the crime was committed. This is where the criminal is housed until court. If the crime is deemed harsh enough by the courts and requires many months or years of time, the prisoner is transferred to a Federal Prison to serve his/her term.

Jail is usually where people are held before a trial and prison is where they serve their time. Prisons are government/state places. Jails are local.

Jail is usually run by the city or county. Prison is usually run by the state or the feds. You go to jail while you are awaiting bail or your during your trial (if you don't get bail). If you are found guilty, you go to jail for short sentences and prison for longer ones.

Everyone that gets arrested goes to jail. Then when you go to court and if you get sentenced more than a year you go to prison. If it's less than a year then you do your time in county jail. Over a year you do time in state prision.

OK do this, drive drunk and get caught...Go to jail. Then when you get out shoot someone in the leg or arm but do not kill them, and you'll go to prison for a while. Question will definitely be answered.
