Well it seems some people can't look past more than a decade ago to find brilliant female artists. My shortlist includes Joan baez, janis Joplin, Stevie Nicks, Joni Mitchell and Madonna. But i'll have to say the best is, based a lot on my personal opinion, Sandy Denny. She was one of the first to bring female songwriting to the fore, pioneered folk rock and brought folk music to the fore. Her wonderful songwriting ability, combined with her brilliant vocals and love of music in general makes her my number one female artist.
However, if i factor popularity into it it would probably be madonna. And deservedly so, for it takes a lot of hard work to maintain the career she has had.

Jane Austen ... if by artist you mean writer too. All these fly by night singers and celebrities will be has-beens in a decade at the most ... but someone who can write a classic book will be immortal.
