We got taught in our psychology skills that you should look at the person you are listening to with an "unconditional positive regard" ie look at them, and never judge what they are saying. I can't remmeber who exactly is meant to have said this. You could also try nodding appropriately, and asking relevant questions at the right times.

listening skills are the ability for a child or person to listen to directions, comprehend what it is they are to do, and to be able to execute it correctly.

in a lecture setting, it would be the ability for the child to listen to the lesson, and to encode it properly in their memory and to be able to access that information later.
