Well, there are a number of things you can do. You can try downloading a codec pack which most likely will include the codec you need to play the file, which shouldn't be too hard. There is a free software program called "Media Info" which can scan the file and display which codec you need to install (http://mediainfo.sourceforge.net/en). Or, you can use a media player which plays a large selection of file types. I recommend you try VLC media player. It literally plays everything (http://www.filehippo.com/software/multimedia/). On the webpage, you will see listed VLC media player and several other media players. I included this webpage because it has other media players which you might want to try. In addition, the webpage has a download link for K-Lite Codec Full, which is very likely to include the codec you need for the file in question. If you have a high speed connection, you can download the Mega pack and it has everything. Good luck. If I had to choose between the 2, I would try VLC media player before downloading any codec packages.

You say MPlayer - are you using Linux? There is a complete package of Windows codecs you can download. First you need to create a new folder named "win32" (without the quotes) in /usr/lib/ as this is where MPlayer looks for Windows codecs.

You need to be root in your distro, then in a console do:

mkdir /usr/lib/win32/

Then go to Linux Forums http://www.linuxforums.org/ and ask for the URL of the Windows Media codec package (or do a search before asking) - I think it's about 10Mb. Download it, unzip it, and copy all the contents into your newly created win32 folder. Your MPlayer should now play avi, wmv and other Windows proprietary formats. It should even play WMV9s with those codecs - mine does.

DC :)
