Guppies, Platies, and Swordtails are the most hardy fish you can find. They will survive most conditions and get along with any community fish. The life span is about the same so which you find better suited for your tank will be the best choice. Guppes are schooling fish so be sure to get 3 or 4 if you have a big tank. Although sometimes guppies may pick on other fish, but this usually happens if you only have 1 guppy. Swordtails and Platies (which are the same) can usually be alone but do better with a companion. Guppies are more vibrant and usually are all the same size although some tails are longer. Platies and Swordtails can be bigger or smaller and come in many different colors including: red, blue, prange, gold, and black. They are usually a mix of colors unless you get gold twinbar platies or marigold platies or swordtails. There are also many species of platies too including, red tukedo platy (red with black on its sides,) gold twinbar platy (mainly gold with small amounts of red and orange,) sailfin platy (mainly are a solid color but have long fins,) and coral blue platy (bluish with red tail.) These are just some of the many different colors and varities of platies.

all three have the potiental to live close to the same lifespan 2-4 yrs. This is all in theory, because there are many other factors that come into play. How the water quality of the tank is, and if the tank is set up to suite the fish, the temp, hardness of water, correct diet and amount fed to fish play a important role. Also keeping in mind that these fish are mass produced and sold to petstore so diseases and inbreeding cause problems that you might not see right away when purchasing a new fish. Platys and swordtail are related and can breed together. All together as a group livebearing fish do not usually live as long as egg laying species of fish, you might consider having a mix of both in your tank.

swordtails are actually a type of platy. Guppies and platies are both hardy and easy to take care of. In my opinion guppies are prettier, but i find platties pretty cool too! It also matters you aquarium set up. A lot of times guppies will breed like mad, so u need room for babies, i dont beleive platies breed as much. They both seem like great fish, but id go with guppies. I have 4 and they are really easy to take care of and they havent had babies!

Actually, a swordtail is a type of platy.

So, between a guppy and a platy.....
They are both hardy and easy to care for. Both species are live bearing and breed like crazy. They both about the same life span (though I tend to see more platies live slightly longer). So what it really comes down to is which one do you like better?
