There is no standard configuration. If you don't have a manual you need to find one online at the manufacturers' websites.

Look on the top or read of the drive. Typically there is a sticker that will tell you.
P - Primary
S - Secondary
CS - Cable select; closest drive to the mainboard is selected as drive 0

You have to move the little plastic bit onto the different prongs (located on the back of the hard drive)
.............and there should be a sticker on the hard drive somewhere that tell you what prongs mean what.

Some RAM/hard drive problems can be easily fixed yourself by using easily available tools. I found the info at http://fixit.in useful. Try this site, if you can get what is required.

These are brand / model specific settings. this is no universal rule for this. Just go to the hard disk(s) manufacturer web site(s), doa search for each specific model & then go to the "support" section.
They usually include simple, end-user instructions with clear & helpful diagrams for reference.
