I have to say I'm loving Torchwood. This is not to say that I didn't enjoy Doctor Who. Torchwood is edgier and darker and just appeals more to me.
Definitely John Barrowman over David Tennant...but then I Iiked Christopher Eccleston better than David as well. (sorry!)
Gwen or Rose? - Gwen - she's a more mature and well rounded character. She exhibits both strength and intelligence. Rose was a not too bright shop girl who kept changing her accent who became codependent on the doctor. Her charm was in her impulsiveness but her voice grated on my nerves.

Torchwood, because it is a smash hit and it nearly took over Eastenders' first show with 1.7 million viewers across the UK.

Maybe John Barrowman because I have been a fan of him longer than David Tennant and I like his character more (Captain Jack Harkness).

Definitely Rose Tyler because she was probably the best ever companion of The Doctor, ever.

Doctor Who is better. Torchwood is supposed to be a similar sort of thing aimed at a more adult audience but doesn't quite work - there is a lot of sex and violence put in deliberately to shock. Sometimes it works other times it doesn't. I still like it but its not a patch on Doctor Who. The character of Jack isn't nearly as likeable as he was in Doctor Who either, but I am looking forward to seeing Jack back in series 3.
David Tennant is a great actor although I do not think DW is his finest work. John Barrowman I have only ever seen in these two series.
Gwen and Rose. Like them both, again like Rose better because like DW better.

Must go for Doctor Who.

I have watched Torchwood, but could not get into the plot.
Doctor Who is far easier to watch, and thus gives you better entertainment value, something you need to enjoy a programme.

I thought Rose was the most "believable" companion to The Doctor, she at least had a mind of her own.

Doctor who. Reason, decent actors, David Tennant, Billie Piper. Doctor Who has existed for 40 years, Torchwood is substandard in my opinion
