The production company gets a deal with a network, who finances all (or sometimes less than all). The network then makes money off selling advertising.

Whoever owns the copyright, either the production company or the network, then additionally gets to make money off DVD sales, and huge money off of syndication. Years and years of syndication means free money (look at Seinfeld - still making them money but they're not having to do any work for it).

advertising and product placement. The commercials are obvious but if you ever notice a name brand product in the show you are watching it is not an accident. The advertiser payed big bucks for that. Sometimes the products are placed in post production so they are not even there in front of the camera. Potentially you can see a different product for each re-run of the same show - just a few clicks in the editing room and a coke can be a pepsi.

The first Superman movies with Christopher Reeves was one of the most blatant product placements I've ever seen. You'll notice when they are having the big fight in Metropolis and they knock Superman into the huge Marlboro truck - not an accident.

TV shows make their money by selling advertising time to companies. Ergo we end up with commercials.

commercials - and the nielson rating system helps them determine how much they can charge advertisers for 15 seconds, 30 seconds, etc. Find out how much a 30 second commercial costs during the superbowl....my guess would be over a million dollars.
