If lawn grass is not cut back and is allowed to go to seed it ruins the turf. The plants will put all their energy into making the seed and they will not retain their texture. Grass needs to be cut to stay thick and well rooted. Also, most lawn seed is a hybrid and it doesn't seed true to its original plant, so if it sprouts, it disturbs the original grass bed and the turf is further damaged. When a lawn reseeds, you get different kinds of grass, most of which won't grow well. If a lawn gets matted with excess leaves and other debris like grass clippings that are not mulch-cut the plants don't have the ability to recreate themselves and keep themselves growing as a mass. The roots get weak and the plants get sparse leaving room for foreign plants to take root. A lawn is an artificially created landscape - if you don't take care of it, it will deteriorate.

Step 1. Clean, mow and mulch the yard. 2nd, Use Round-up or any non selective herbicide on the areas you want for grass. 3, about a week after you apply the herbicide; over seed with perennial Rye grass seed. 4. Come June when the soil temps come up; sod, sprig or seed using some type of bermuda grass. 419 tiff dwarf is best, but must be sodded or sprigged. If you must seed, use "Savannah" bermuda seed. Keep the ground moist, it takes a couple of weeks for germination. Use a mild fertilizer like 10-10-10 at first and by july start hitting it with18-0-0. Oh, and keep it mowed short about 1 inch twice a week till it gets established.

I knew a man that hated to mow his yard so he sprayed it with vegetation killer and balcktopped it all. Now his kids have a wonderful go cart track. If you want an attractive lawn, and a nice lawn adds value to your property, you mow and rake, if not let it grow and be known as the block bum.

We mow and rake our lawns for appearance.
It is much better to use a mulching lawn mower as the grass clippings return nutrients back to the soil and if the grass is not too long when it is cut raking is not required.

Your turfgrass won't grow if you leave it covered up with leaves all fall and winter.
I don't even know why we have vast expanses of lawn except for aesthetics. In my opinion, it's an utter waste of time and resources and is really bad for the environment.
