When I was in college, Sociology was the major everyone made fun of. Anything good that could be learned from the fields would be learned better and more critically by studying psychology.
English Literature will at least teach you to write clearly and think critically about issues. These are skills tha may aid you in the future.

Hello,
Well, It depends on what you validate as "important2 They both have their heights and as well as their lows....
English Literature is a very interesting subject, as well as sociology. If you mean you want to do a subject that you enjoy very much and you want to get to a top University, that could work out for you.
Imagine an Individual going to Princeton University, does an English Literature BA...now everyone wants to emply that individual not because of the career direction but because of the University..it happens alot...
...you might feel like rushing to a decsion, you know what they say strike while the iron is hot, but you could end up crashing down..take your time...at least you'll get there in the end...

A degree in itself is important, no matter the subject of it. English Lit gives you an understanding of our language and the history behind it - you'll be very well spoken and written, a big bonus in today's world.
Sociology will allow you to study cultures and attitudes of different populations around the world.
As far as "importance", you'll need to define what you mean.
If it's important for you to be able to earn a living, then perhaps Sociology would be better. Do you want to teach? Then perhaps English Lit is your calling.
It's up to you. But remember, any degree is better than none at all.

There's NO way any of us can answer that question for you.
Which is more "important" is entirely up to you.
If you mean "which is more likely to get me a job" then the answer is they probably both are equally likely. Neither major leads directly to a set career path (like, say, engineering does), but both open the doors to lots of potential jobs. Both teach skills which can be implemented in a variety of different jobs.
Why don't you take classes in both subjects and see how you like them? Talk to some of the professors and current students in each department. While english and sociology may both be good fields, your particular university might have a stronger program in one than the other.

Important? Is writing a great poem more important than studying and trying to solve the problems of society? My point is that they are different and one might be important to some people and the other might be important to others. If you are asking which degree would more likely get you a job, I don't think either one has much of an edge.
