It's o.k. to use a pad, just change it more frequently.
It's better for the menstrual blood to come out of your body anyway. Sometime in the future you can check out the menstural cup or the keeper.
The Keeper is a natural gum rubber cup - similar to the material that is used in baby bottle nipples - that is worn internally, holding (instead of absorbing) monthly menstrual flow and does not contain animal byproducts! The cup can even be worn safely overnight. To insert the cup, you first hold the cup between your fingers and insert. The cup forms a seal which keeps fluid inside the cup. It will not absorb or disrupt your natural vaginal moisture. It is environmentally friendly to the earth and to yourself! No paper products to throw away month after month. The cup holds one ounce of menstrual flow. (An average woman's entire monthly flow is about 2 to 4 ounces, or so they say!) And it's so comfortable - you need to make sure not to forget you're wearing it! To remove it you simply pinch the bottom of the cup to release the seal, then bear down gently with your pelvic muscles to help move it downward. Remove slowly, slightly tilting the cup, and empty the contents into the toilet. Rinse or wipe and you're ready to reinsert. Between cycles you should wash The Keeper sufficiently with warm water and a mild antibacterial soap or a mild vinegar and water solution. (DO NOT USE HARSH CHEMICALS)

I started using them about 6 months after I lost my virginity, but they were still so painful. Make sure that when you are inseting the tampon, you are relaxed. What worked for me, I put one leg on top of the toilet seat and then I bent the knee that was on the floor, this helped in spreading the opening, making it more comfortable to insert the tampon.
The first few times, it's normal to be in pain, possibly because you aren't putting them in far enough.

Have you tried the Slim Fit that Playtex sells specially for teens? You also need to relax your body compeltly because if you tense up every time you try, your vaginal musles will clench up too. Next, try to put a tiny bit of vasaline on the tampon applicator so it goes on smoothy. Hope this helps, and good luck.

Well sometimes i have problems with it too. Your not the only sixteen year old that has that problem. im sixteen and i use them but sometimes i dont stick it up there enough and its really irritating so i take it out and do another one its complicated to tell someone. Soon enough i think you'll probably get it if you keep practicing.

Try a different brand of tampon. Playtex hurts me every time I use them. The only brand I use is Tampax. I agree with the other answerer about not inserting them in far enough. Just keep trying and maybe have your doctor instruct you if you keep having problems.

I don't think it's a sign of "being not ready" for me i couldn't use them at first either, this might sound horrible but i couldn't use them until after i had entercourse, the doctor said i was just too small, so that might be what is up with you because it sounds kind of the same. But trust me it will be all ok i promise...

im 12 and i use them. Just relax and don't think about it when ur putting it in. Think of something else. Find a comfortable position to sit in while ur doing it too. My friend taught me tht if u lie on the floor and put it in, it doesn't hurt as much. (idk if it works though i've never had a problem doing it so i didn't try it)

it's possible that you aren't getting it in far enough. try putting it in by reaching your arm around your back and butt rather than just between your legs, that might help you get it farther and at a better angle. it took me a while to get used to them, so that might be part of it.

Maybe you have a thick hymen. I am assuming you are a virgin. Your first time with sex will also probably be rather painful. Maybe you will not be able to use them until your hymen is gone, maybe your gyno can break it for you?
