Assuming you actually mean PCICIA cards; if your laptop has a slot, it can be used for allsorts of things.

Adding wireless & bluetooth connectivity, TV, card readers, wired ethernet, printer connections, USB ports, etc

Notebooks typically either use PCMCIA or Card Bus adapters.These adapters are phasing out as more options are being integrated into notebooks. Also as companies take more advantage of USB technology. Of course the engineering companies still need to get away from serial adapters.

PCI cards are add in cards for laptops that can add fuctionality from wireless cards to usb ports and extra network ports etc..

They're used for adding expanded capability to the computer. There are cards for adding extra USB/Firewire ports, cards that add modems, wireless connectivity and so on and so on.
