Directly in Boston, I would say go to Modern Pastry or Bova Bakery, both in the North End. Slightly outside of Boston, in Somerville there is Lyndells Bakery, which has THE best cake you'll ever find. Also, in Everett there's the Elm Street Bakery, which has really nice cheesecakes.

Rosie's Bakery is good, they have a few different locations in the Boston area.
Also Mike's Pastry in the North End is good.

This place as far as I am concerned is the "BEST." Everything that is prepared here is so good. You will be well please if you go here. It is rated 5 star as well. Yummy place!!

Believe it or not, the store Party Favors in Brookline has delicious cupcakes!
They bake them there. I have had them and can say they are great!
