This is a common problem for non coin collectors or ones that have not kept up with things. If you know how to grade coins or at least be close, you can just go get a magazine like Coins or Coinage. The prices are retails and expect to get 40% or so less if you sell to a dealer. If you do not know how to grade coins the easiest thing to do is go to a coin dealer. Most that have a store and that have been in business for some time are usually okay. You can always also go to more than one. If you don't want to sell they may charge you a small fee for their time. If you don't mind some work, go to a library and see if they have a grading guide or a Red Book. You can buy either one at most coin stores. They will help in grading and the Red Book tells you where the mint marks are. The prices in the Red Book are way to high or out of date the day it is published. Get a monthly magazine. If you are not from the states you need a book on your countries coins. Paper money is a different story and you need to see a currency dealer for help.
