I can put a finger on the heating element, but after 1-2 seconds, I have to take it off, it feels like a hot pan or iron. I would think this makes sense, but not over 1 day after I last ran it.

Also, last time it was run, it did smell odd, like a strange gas or something burning. I'd appreciate any thoughts! Thank you!

sounds like the timer is stuck, leaving the heating element in the on position

The rotary cycle selection knob on the front of the dishwasher is the front part of your timer. Apparently the timer is stuck on the dry cycle. If you have a switch to select air or power dry, turn the power dry off and make plans to replace the timer. Also, manually advance the knob to the off position. Try running the dishwasher to see if the timer is bad or is the dry cycle just a dead spot in the timer. You may be able to run the machine without the power dry cycle if it is just a dead spot in the timer.

Without a schematic I cant say for sure. Try pushing the energy saver button (if so equipped) and see if that cools it off. If this doesn't work turn off the breaker supplying it (unless there is a switch. With the power off.remove the bottom front cover and you should be able to disconnect the washer until you can purchase a replacement. They are not worth repairing, in fact in most cases it will cost you more to have it fixed.

do you have the heat button pushed in for drying your dishes? cause that will make the heating element stay hot for at least 30 mins or so. also you may have have a plastic spoon or cup or lid thrusted out on the rack by the water jets and it landed on the bottom of the dishwasher and melted and that smells awful. but if you smell gas, if your renting i would call them to send someone out to check it out. if you own your home and its under warranty, call and have a service man out. that is dangerous order that could be fatal to you and your family. better safe than sorry.

Sounds like the switch that automatically turns the heater on and off has malfunctioned. If you can unplug your washer, you should. Tracing an electrical problem might require a call to the service man.

you may have a short or your dialing knob in front is not shutting off all the way.
the machine may be on and the dial is not quite shutting off...turn it and see what happens

when all else fails, get a new one 200-250
