It's because people automatically correlate messages of peace and unity with hippie-based, drug-induced, rantings. It's rather stereotypical and quite pathetic really.

Well, certainly a lot of the beatles' material was very suggestive of the times in which they were building their careers and their fame. I don't think any realist would try to pretend that the Beatles were "clean and sober" when they created a lot of their material. It's just the way things were in that line of business at that time, and let's face it, still is today for a lot of "pop artists".
The approval / disapproval issue is, of course, a different subject, and not part of the question you asked. But whatever this person, or that person happens to think about sex, drugs, and rock 'n roll, I guess is his or her right to think it, and in no way affects YOU, so, I guess as the Beatles themselves would have said.... "Let it be... let it be... let it be" LOL

People look for meanings in songs, especially hidden meanings. People will say that about all Led Zepplin songs too. I guess that it was because of the times, drugs were becoming more accessible and acceptable as a way to "expand your mind". I am sure many songs were composed while they were high, but you are right, that doesnt mean they were about drugs.

This is so funny. I had my (much older) boyfriend sit down with me and talk to me about music he loved when he was growing up... and we listened to the Beatles. He told me, on almost every song, that he thought they were about drugs. Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds. (LSD...) etc. etc. I was in shock! I never really thought of most of the songs as drug songs until he told me that... But, he was a druggie back in the day, so that's probably why he thought they were all about drugs!

of course ALL their songs werent about drugs. they spanned almost a decade as a band and the drugs didnt come in till about halfway even then, they were starting to experience going off in their own directions and the beatlemania was getting to big and also conflict so just because they did drugs didnt mean they had to write every song about drugs. they had many things going on, so people are just stupid who assume that.
