I think the phrase is ' a bird in hand is worth two in the bush'
similar to 'half a loaf is better than nothing'
Both mean its better to have a little of something and to be happy/satisfied with it than have nothing at all

I'm not sure where your question is going, but this phrase is "supposed" to mean that if you already have something it is better than what you don't have since what you have is already yours.
