JULIE ANDREWS

I could not even begin to suggest "who ... in the world" has the best range. But, of all of those who have achieved stardom and great fame, then I cannot think of a person greater than Julie Andrews. Any number of websites attest to her amazing 5-octave range in her heydey. Here is a quote from a website:

To paraphrase an enthusiastic critic, "Julie Andrews is not only a star, she's an entire whirling constellation." Julie Andrews has been entertaining audiences for close to sixty years -- first in her early years as a child performer with her parents in the waning years of British vaudeville, then to the international arenas of stage, films, television and recordings.

...From a working-class background in 1930s England, young Julia Elizabeth Wells (she later took her stepfather's name) astounded audiences with her remarkable five-octave vocal range in music hall appearance with her parents all across Britain...

So, you really ask a great question. My challenge would be this...What performer can you think of who has a greater musical range and who has used it to achieve greater stardom than Julie Andrews??? I know that there are performers who can squeak and make noise at higher pitches, but as far as sounding musical over the whole range, I still would vote for Julie Andrews.

...I can't think of any others with that claim to fame!

PS: I just read the comment from Saidah B who is several anwerers above me. Yes. I love that song, too. That takes me back more than 30 years to the mid-1970s. The singer of that song was Minnie Ripperton, who in turn was an idol of Mariah Carey!

Probably the late Jeff Buckley - eight octaves and brilliant in all of them - and his father Tim Buckley wasn't half bad either.

You get some classical singers who have a very wide range - Callas was one - but are wobbly in the middle. The thing with Buckley was that his voice was superb at any pitch (not to mention his breath control).

Christina Aguilera is who I'm going to have to go with.

Mariah has a beautiful voice when it's not hitting too high of notes. When she DOES hit those HIGH notes it's like nails on a chalkboard to me, sorry. Not comforting or glorious sounding at all when she does that.
