Well I am thirteen and I got my first cell phone this summer. But it depends on what the phone will be used for and how mature the person receiving it is. I received my cell because I am a cheerleader who is away from home a lot. Doing practice, going to games, competitions, and cheer leading camp for two weeks each summer. So it really depends. But it is also a great source of communication when you are away from home, and is great for emergency's.
You can even use a pre-paid plan so that you wont be in debt with a cell phone bill. Hope this helped you.

I think it depends what they want it for. A lot of teenagers just want one as a fashion accessory first and as a means of communication second. I used to work with kids and they were *always* playing with their phones and showing them off, but I hardly ever saw any of them use the phones to make a call or text someone.

However, I do think it's a good idea for children to have a way to contact their parents and vice versa, so I would say when a teenager is allowed to go out on their own, even to school, then that is old enough to have a phone. I would get an old one though, so it is only used for it's intended purpose (communication) and not as an accessory and use a pay-as-you-go one rather than a contract.

When the child can work and pay for their own. And tell the child to turn the cell phone off in school, there's nothing more irritating to a teacher than students who text message and violate school rules by using the phone during class time.

When they start going school, but they're probably not responsible enough to know when to stop using their cell phones, so give them one of those pay as you go phones. If there's an emergency, they can call you.

I reckon that it depends... I find silly seeing children witht he cellphone... I actually hate it... it does not matter if they belong to rich family or not... Older people might have a bad judgement for their parents too. When they start to go out with their friends it might be the convenient time.... and avoid to let them to take the cellphine with them to school. Teachers do not like it....

Depends. Do they do lots of after school activities? If they are away from home a lot and need a source of communication, then that's when they should get one.
