Dragonjousters series(joust,alta,sanctuary) by Mercedes Lackey.The setting is ancient Egypt.Hunger, anger, and hatred are constants for young Vetch, rendered a brutally mistreated and overworked serf by the Tian conquest of his homeland. But everything improves when a Tian jouster requisitions Vetch to become the first serf ever to be a dragon boy. His training is intense, and his duty clear-cut: to tend his jouster, Ari, and his dragon, Kashet. He discovers that, because Ari himself had hatched Kashet, the dragon is different from others that have been captured live in the wild and must be drugged to be made tractable. Dresden file book series by Jim Butcher.There are 8 books in the series beginning with stormfront.It narrates the story of Harry Dresden,chicago's only professional wizard who works as a detective.He stands between the general population who is ignorant about the supernatural world and the monsters - vampires,werewolves,fallen angels,fey.He is aided by Bob,a talking skull.Karrin Murphy-a police officer and Thomas-a white court vampire.
Savage and Ascension by Kelley Armstrong.Both are available free from the author's website.They tell the story of Clayton,how he was made a werewolf,how Jeremy rescued the feral child wolf and earned Clayton's undying gratitude,and how Clayton became someone to reckon with in his Pack.Told in 1st person from Clayton's view,it is poignant and touching at times and humorous.We understand how his childhood influenced his later life.
Another good series is the Dark Hunter series by Sherrilyn Kenyon.The books provide an alternate take on vampires.People who are unjustly murdered call upon Artemis(Greek goddess) and she grants them a day to avenge themselves.After that they are recruited to her army to fight against evil.These are romance novels.Best of the series are 'Dance with the devil' and 'Seize the night'.

The door to december by Dean Koontz.A psychiatrist's daughter was kidnapped by her ex-husband years ago. When the daughter is finally found, the real fight begins. One by one the people who held her captive become mysteriously tortured and killed. Everyone is afraid the young girl will be next.
The mystery unravels as to what happened to the young girl while she was kidnapped. The young girl, Melanie, is unable to speak, but her mother soon learns that the young girl went through extreme torture as her father used her for a rat in his experiments.
Read both Odd thomas and Forever odd by Dean Thomas.These books are about Odd Thomas who see dead people and is compelled to solve crimes.

For fantasy I like The Chronicles of Narnia. Nancy Drew is a good mystery/ fictional history book. I also like The Redwall series, but I'm not sure if that qualifies. Any book by Frank Peretti is good too.

Elizabeth Peters' books. The Amelia Peabody series has all your requirements plus a strong dose of humour. Starting with 'Crocodile on a Sandbank' this strong minded Victorian lady archaeologist solves a murder amidst a tempestuous romance. Later adventures introduce her precocious son Ramses, tomb raiders, a master criminal, spies and curing all the Egyptian villager's illnesses with ipecacuanha.
The author has written non-fiction books on Egyptology in her own name so the background is authentic.
Look on the Harper Collins website for e-books mostly the later ones.

Fiona Buckley has a historical mystery series. They take place during Queen Elizabeth I's time in England. The heroine is Ursula Blanchard, a lady in waiting to the queen.

For fantasy, I'd recommend David Eddings' "The Belgariad" which is a five-book series. Also, Anne McCaffrey's "Dragonriders of Pern."
For Mystery, Sherlock Holmes has always been my favorite.

Fantasy-David Eddings is the king. Mystery-go for Minette Walters. Sorry, not sure on historic but you could try Antonia Fraser.

Douglas adams, sci fi fantasy/comedy Hitch hikers guide. Read the whole series
R.A. Salvatore, Fantasy - Ice wind dale trilogy for starters.
Neil Gaiman - Oh my god he should have been first. I read his book called American Gods, I passed it to my mom, she read it, then my dad picked it up when she was half way thru, They got into a fight over who could read it.
They both read it and talked about it for about two weeks. This is a must read. It is Great. And this would be a mystery/fiction. Any one thats reads this question, read this book. I DONT CARE BOUT BEST ANSWER IF YOU ALL TAKE MY ADVICE!

Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrell by Susanna Clarke has fantasy, mystery and history. Many people love this book, but there are others who didn't like it because it's long and heavy at parts
