Personally, I think there are better places in England: Manchester & Newcastle for nightlife; Bristol & Cambridge are great for relaxing and sightseeing; even Birmingham is shedding its industrial image and becoming more lively.
I just find that London lacks any type of soul; it just seems grey, dirty and uninspiring. It's also looking more and more like an American city all the time.
Just my opinion.

London's a great city with plenty to do ALL the time!!!
We're always moaning about the Tube, but it has actually been voted the best transport system in the world, and it's the oldest.
Uninspiring? How can you not be inspired by the world-class architecture on show by The Gherkin and Canary Wharf? They're not just office blocks - they're amazing! Watch this space for more innovative buildings, London's more or less going to become a modern art museum in time for the Olympics?

And here I am in Orlando Florida. I find London amazing in many regards, though I do believe that twit Lord Mayor Livinstoned has done great harm to the city and to it's international image. I really do not understand how he got elected, but then we elected Bush, didn't we? Only silver lining in THAT cloud is - coulda been weasel kerry.
I loathe and detest Disney, which few from London would likely understand, but here in Orlando am not at all alone in bemoaning what Disney and it's imitators have done to this area. They say familiarity breeds contempt, and while that may be so I have more often found familiarity breeds boredom. That which you find mundane in London is still stirring to many of us who do not experience it daily. As to London looking more American all the time, I agree that many new buildings there as everywhere else are atrocities. I attribute that to the fact that Architecture has rapidly become Internationalized, and so the regional flavors that made buildings have their real magic have all been smothered in something relatively nasty. My Christmas wish for you is that somehow you find some of the magic in your wonderful city that many of the rest of us so delight in.

you forgot to mention that it's extremely over-priced. Anyway, Paris, Amsterdam, Prague, Rome, Milan, and Berlin, are all far superior to London in every possible way.
