I dated this guy for 4 years and we broke up in May. I let him borrow an extra car of mine as long as he makes payments. But yesterday he got a DUI in New Jersey. He lives in Maryland and I live in Oklahoma. I told him I want my car back but he is avoiding all my calls, emails, text messages. I don't know what to do!
I know letting him borrow the car was so stupid! He may end up going to jail for 90 days. I just need to know how to get the car back without having it repossed and ruining my credit. Can I report the car stolen, even if I know who has it?

You probably can't report the car stolen since you lent it to him, but that might be an option to try. It probably would be worth your effort to talk to the police to get their advice on what to do.

Also, I would contact a lawyer. A strongly worded letter from a lawyer may get some results from your ex, and it would help you start the legal process of making your claim to the car. You might have to file a claim in court for a return of the car, and other costs such as traveling out there to get it and time off of work. If you can't afford a lawyer, there are legal aid agencies that provide services for discounted rates or free if you qualify. Check the nearest university law school for a lead on this.

You are allowed to lend your car. You need to go get your car, if you don't have keys the dealership can make some for you. Take it in the middle of the night or while he is at work. The law is on your side of this.
