I think you're talking about cubic yards. Half of 1&5/8 cubic yards is between 3/4 and 7/8 of a cubic yard. I don't think you could buy 7/8 of a yard. Generally, you can buy 1/2 yard or 1 yard, but I suppose they might try for 3/4 of a yard for you.

converted to increments: 3/4yd. + 2 1/4" to be exact.
If you want to go over the exact amount, the portion would be 7/8yd. which is 31 1/2".
