Wouldn't cutting that money out of taxes for the poor do much better? Then it encourages more productivity, less laziness, and it would allow the poor that work more of an income?

I will say that those with disabilities do need assistance, however.

I agree completely.

Welfare has been too big of a crutch for two long. Our Nation has suffered because of it.

Let's take for instance, the American Indians. They have at least a billion excuses why the majority of them cannot and will not work. But, really, it's like this. They have been on welfare for generations. Their parents didn't work and their grandparents didn't work. They don't really realize the value of working for their pay.

If you don't believe me, go drive through your local reservation. We build them new houses (nicer than my own by the way... that I WORKED for), pave their streets, put satellite dishes on the roofs and they can't even figure out how to mow the lawn. It is disgusting.

On our local reservation, there aren't many homes (brand new even) that they windows aren't shot out in. They had to quit using copper because they were ripping out the plumbing and selling it for beer money. One family even cut a hole in the side of their house so the horse could drink out of the bathtub. I guarantee that this wouldn't happen if they had to work for it and build it on their own. Things given to you never mean as much as things you have to work for.

Taxpayers should not be responsible for supporting able bodied people. NO WAY. They should support their own families.

I completely agree that the elderly and disabled (truly disabled, not like some people that I know who take advantage of the system) need to be taken care of, but taken care of better than they currently are. They deserve more respect than they get.

And I think that if a struggling family needs help, they should receive it for a time, until they have a plan and get more education and get on their feet so that they can be a contributing member of society. If they end up with a better job and are better able to support themselves, then the welfare system worked and no one is complaining.

I am very glad that Clinton, begrudgingly (after vetoing it several times) decided to sign this bill that congress had tried to get passed for welfare reform.

welfare today is not what it was desinged for. it was designed for those working trying to make it who needed a little help for a short time. It is no longer like that nor has it been that way for awhile. My father is disabled and has been for awhile, and my mom works full time. Several years ago (im talking 20 plus years ago) my mom filed for welfare for temporary assistance because my brother had medical problems i was real sick and then the meds for my dad. she got turned down, why....she made fifteen dollars to much, a year! my families income was less than 25k a year way less. But people out there who dont want a job can go out there and get it easy. I say go back to the original idea of welfare, or get rid of it altogether and start work-fare

I completely agree that those with disabilities need assistance. However, the way welfare is currently handled makes it to where the people who truly need it are receiving less and less. I believe that the welfare system is currently a crutch to make up for family values and morals that are lacking. I was raised to believe that you go to school or go to work, and support your family. The other choice is welfare...and that only adds another generation to the already staggering problem.

We have Welfare because we have been plagued with bleeding heart, left wing liberal loonies. Some lefty decides he feels sorry for the poor then finds a way to get the government to take your tax money to help the poor, whether you want to or not.

Welfare, like most government programs, is double jeopardy. Money is given to the poor and the government takes money to run the Welfare bureaucracy. When bureaucracies are formed, the bureaucrats do everything they can to protect their jobs.

You are right. Some people really do need assistance because they cannot take care of themselves. Others, who are physically and mentally able to work should find some kind of work to do.

The question is, why don't we give the welfare to the working poor?

I think the answer lies with the liberal elite. The only ones who survived the great depression. They enacted welfare to literally save their necks, and to absolve their guilt.

EDIT: Ali g--this single mother started law school pregnant. That dog won't hunt. Oh, and I waited tables for 10 years and took out student loans to do it.

Because Liberals dont want to work, but seriously I agree with you, but I dont think we should cut there taxes to much they are already low, we at least should make them work for their checks.

NO the majority of people on welfare are people who have been on welfare for generations, who dont want to work , how do I know?? I grew up with these people.

I think many on the Left dislike productive citizens because productivity nearly always leads to competition, which produces winners and losers -- or, at least, those who fare better and those who fare worse. Equality, to the Left, does not mean equal rights but rather equal economic status; and if that means making us all equally miserable, then so be it.

The fact that we, as Americans, take care of other Americans in need, makes this the greatest country on the planet. It the system has flaws, it should be fixed , not disbanded.

Welfare is great for short term help, not long term support.

How about single mothers whose ex-spouses aren't paying alimony or child support? Those are the majority of people on welfare.
