So this is a hardware firewall. Is the Westell just a modem or one of the modem/router combo deals. If it's just a modem then it has no firewall (that I know of). Only your router will have a firewall, either that or the software firewall on your computer is interfering with it. That's all I can think of.

kemster is right, the firewall has to allow the program to work, there should be a list of .exe files or http:// sites that you allow though the firewall, u need to go to the section that allows you to edit preferences for your firewall to allow that access. Usually when a site is not on the list of allowable connections, it will not load. Are you running a windows based operating system and do you have windows firewall controlling the interent? Or are you using another companys' firewall? what model is the westell and did it come with firewall protection in the software.

Uh are you an administrator if not then this is no help to you. Most firewalls have a list of blocked and accepted programs that use the Internet so if AIM is being accepted the firewall will allow it to connect to the Internet. So just find that list and check it as accepted.
