Really bad idea. A diesel operates on heat, so by blocking the thermostat open you are preventing you diesel from operating at maximum efficiency.

Leaving the thermostat open on a diesel is not a good idea. Diesel engines work off of heat that is why trucks are equipped with heater blocks to plug in on cold nights. With the engine not getting hot you are not burning the fuel properly. This will result in sludge build-up in your motor which is never good for an engine. Then you have the problem of keeping warm since the heater for the inside temperature works off of the water temp. and since the water is not getting warm the inside of the vehicle will never get warm. Best thing to do is get a working thermostat or have radiator cleaned if vehicle is over heating.

if a diesel is running too cold you will have a problem with carbon building up on the fuel injectors and pistons, also unburned fuel will wash off the oil on the cylinder walls. definitely a good idea to have them running at normal operating temp.

Yep. You get acids when the engine isn't hot enough and cylinder wear from unburnt fuel.
