I know that John Lennon reportedly said, "Before Elvis there was nothing". Haven't read that anyone famous has said that about The Beatles....

Before the Beatles (not including Elvis) MOST songs/hits were 'doo-wop'. The Beatles took what inspired them from Elvis and other blues artists and created what we now know as rock n roll, well until craprock came along, anyway :-)
