Easiest way to get 2 computers talking together using Ethernet cables is by getting what's known as a crossover (not patch) cable. This is different than regular cable you commonly see because the wires are all switched to different positions. Once this is done, set both computers to a common workgroup (done in Config -> System) and wait a bit...or you can set each computer to a static ip address...here's some resources...

If the two computers both have Windows XP or 2000 (or Vista I'm sure), then it is as simple as having a network port on both computers and a *crossover* cable between them (as others have said). The operating system should recognize that there's another computer on the network and allow you to surf to shared folders using two backslashes and the computer's name in your Windows Explorer or Internet Explorer.
