I live in Ohio and the minimum wage is going up starting in January. I was at work the other day and my boss told me that since the minumum wage was increasing by 30% I would have to work 30% harder. A few days ago she told me that I better be worth minumum wage come Janurary. I work very hard and come in extra days and it's only (supposed to be) a part-time job. Was it right for her to say this?

In response to the people that think she may have been joking: I thought she was kidding at first and started to laugh, but then she said, "I'm not kidding."

No, and she sounds like a real b*tch to work for. I would look for another place to work.

This depends. Does she value your work, show that she sees you working hard, working extra hours, and being valuable to her and the company? If you think she was playing around with you, trying to make light of the situation, or be sarcastic- then I say let it go, perhaps she didn't realize how inappropriate it sounded. Obviously the minimum wage is going up to counter the increased cost of living, not because the government decided everyone with a minimum wage job needed to work 30% harder. So, if she complains you're not putting 30% more effort into your work come January maybe you can remind her that's not what the wage increase was for. Or maybe you can remind her what a valuable employee you are already, and that she could lose you and have to pay a less valuable employee just as much.

Sounds like you better be worth minimum wage come January...

You didn't say she was teasing you, so take it as a warning... your not her favorite, she will pick a more promising recruit over you...

Welcome to reality... life's not fair... get used to it. Count your blessings - at least you were warned.

If you were the top employee you would not be hearing anything like that, the skating days are over for people to say "well I'm only getting Min. Wage...". That money comes from somewhere and the fat-cats are pissed... they have a 30% wage increase to cover across ALL of their min. wage employees. Some places won't make it for long, some will find other ways to get it back, some can afford it but will just pass the costs back onto their customers (I hate that)... either way...

If you want to work somewhere else you better be worth it over there too... everyone calls her a bitsh but she was VERY fair in letting you know she has to keep only true performers or... she's gone too.
Alot of bosses wont tell you anything, and even have you train your replacement !!!

Be smart... not a whiney baby... THANK HER.

I still want to ask, are you sure she's serious? Does she ever joke? If not, then I'd be pissed that she said that.
If she does joke, is she the type that you can't tell when she's serious or not?

Well, whatever you think she meant, you're probably right. She said it to you, not us answerers, so you know how she is more than we do. I think it's pretty cruel for her to say this. It's not your fault they have to pay you more now, and it's no reason for her to fire you. If you weren't working hard enough before, wouldn't she have already fired you? It doesn't make sense. Did you have a good relationship with her to begin with? She may be looking for a reason to fire you. I don't think it was right for her to say this to you. If you believe you are doing your best (which I think you are, otherwise, you wouldn't be so surprised she said this) then I'd tell on her. Or you should start to look for another job---this is only part time as you said, so maybe it's not so important. Do you have another job or are you a student with a part time job?

Obviously not. If it is a no-where type job you can replace easily, I would report her to her boss. Be professional and curtious.

Contact her boss and request a personal meeting. Tell him/her the facts only with no exagerations. If this person deserves their position they will correct the problem with no harm to you. You may even become the boss.

If you could care less about the job, just forget about it. It sounds like the woman you call your boss is an ignorant b%$#*h. People like this rarely understand reason.

The ones that say, yes you can count on it get the raises later on. The ones that complain, they just keep on moving from one job to another making the same old money.

This depends on YOUR point of view.
If you were paying more for an item from one place than the other and the item was the same. Would'nt you want to pay the lesser price?

No, it wasn't. If there is a human resource dept. in your company, I would report her comments to them.
