The fur trade was the main economy in Canada for a really long time. The trappers were mostly French to begin with. Most of Canada as it is today was founded on the areas granted to British fur traders by the Crown after kicking the French out.

More so in the Northern Provinces----------The longer periods of darkness in the Winter months left the early Canadians with a lot of time on their hands, which they discovered they could fill watching reruns of the adventures of the Cleavers--------Ward, June. Wally, and of course Beaver.
