If it freezes and does not come back to life I would first look at faulty RAM or failing harddrive - another possibility could be a virus (or similar malware) trying to do something in the background (but can't so locking it up)

Try downloading, updating and running: AVG Antivirus, Ad-Aware, Spy-bot Search & Destroy, and Windows Defender. They are free and do a pretty good job. After running them normally, re-run them in "Safe Mode", to make sure that you have gotten everything off of your computer.

If your computer is not working properly while you are working on it, it could be a problem with device drivers, hardware or software.

How long have you been using it? Take a break and Shut down for a while. Once you boot up again, it will have refreshed itself and recovered virtual memory.

You will be refreshed too. ; )
