I dont give my child an allowance but I have been thinking about it since it teaches kids fiscal responsibility.
Here are som good tips if you are a parent about allowance for your kids:
- Don't ever pay your child for good behavior or good grades. If you do, they'll start charging you when they play nice with their cousins, or for getting an "A" on their report card.
- To get money, your child must earn it by doing chores. There should be "citizen of the house" chores such as cleaning their room that don't earn them cash. But they should also have a list of duties that DO pay, such as feeding the dog or taking out the trash. And make it clear that they must complete these chores in order to get the money.
- Set up a four-jar allowance system. Ten percent of any earnings or monetary gifts goes in the charity jar. The rest should be divided into thirds "quick cash," "medium-term savings" and "long-term savings." This teaches them not only to manage their money, but to share it with those who aren't as fortunate. If you'd like to go further, check out the book "Money Still Doesn't Grow On Trees" by Neale S. Godfrey.
