They consist of two layers that are glued around the top. The heat would cause the seal to come apart.

Sometimes water gets inside. I prefer the all stainless steel ones and they are safe to put in the dishwasher and keep the coffee hot longer. Also, if the travel mugs are plastic on the inside they can become distorted by the heat, which is strange since it can't really be much hotter than fresh coffee.

The outside layers of some will melt if you use the heating element to dry, and sometimes water gets between the two layers.

I don't use the dryer, so my travel mugs do go through the dishwasher.

Actually some are dishwasher safe, however I did purchase one that was supposed to be safe for the dishwasher and the metal that i thought was stainless steel became horribly pitted.

Because you might get water between the mug and the insulation.
