Its far to broad a question! each individual sport has a great sportsman like Ali for boxing or Pele for football,
but when you start talking about the individual sports the generation argument comes into play, can great players be conpaired to great players of other generations as there climates are different!
i think the greatest would be someone who has excelled at more than one sport! i support speedway and 2 time world champion Bruce penall went on to be world power boat champion, 6 times champion Tony Rickardsson is currently leading the Swedish touring cars! I'm not saying either of these are the greatest but i think to be a great SPORTSMAN and not just GREAT at your sport you must be multi talented!

Walter Payton. He was not only a great "sports" man, playing for years with the Chicago Bears, but also a great "sportsman" on and off the field. He was probably the greatest running back of all time! He has always been spoken of very highly by both teammates and opponents. He was also a fierce competitor but a compassionate man! He was loved by all both on and off the field!

Roger Bannister (The first person to run the 4 minute mile).

Muhammed Ali - boxing

Ian Thorpe - swimming

Tiger Woods - golf

Pele - football

Steve Redgrave - rowing

Lester Piggott - horse racing

W.G. Grace - cricket

It's all rather subjective, depending on your favourite sport.

The only athlete to apparently win a victory in six succesive Olympic games (surpasing Steve Redgrave's five golds from 1984 to 2000) was the 6thCentury B.C. Ancient Greek wrestler MILO OF CROTON, so that is where my vote goes!! You'll get all kinds of answers, so why not this guy?

I don't think you can say 1 greatest sportsman. Each sport probably has several people would argue for.

Statistically Wayne Gretzky was the most dominant athlete ever. (According to ESPN).

But I have a soft spot for Babe Ruth and Nolan Ryan.

And for one month in the eighties Dave Steib was. (Two one hitters and a no hitter in like 3 weeks).

For me it has to be Simon Garner (Blackburn Rovers). He played for my local team for the vast majority of his career. Several times he was courted by the big clubs of the first division (1980s & early 90s), but always remained loyal. He was our record scorer until the arrival of Alan Shearer and always gave 110%. I know he is not recognised, but to me that kind of loyalty to one club is a rarity in todays game.
